How much water does your household use?
It’s easy to find out. Simply review your water bill or read your water meter.
Your water bill will list the time period covered by the bill, and the total consumption for that period. Convert to gallons, and then divide by the number of days to get your average daily use. To convert cubic feet into gallons: take cubic feet usage X (times) 7.48 to get gallons. (One cubic foot contains just under 7 ½ gallons of water)
There’s no ‘typical’ daily water use, households vary greatly by size, seasonal use, appliances, and personal preferences. It’s more important to notice if your consumption has jumped considerably compared to a similar period in previous years. If you see a jump, contact the Water Department, and we’ll walk you through how to check for leaks, or check below on this web site.
In addition, your water meter can be used to figure out more ‘real-time’ how much water your household is currently using. You can read your meter as often as you like to determine how much water has been used per day, week or month. It will also help you measure the impact of any water-saving measures you implement.
