Jean Silver retired from the Fairhaven Council on Aging as Outreach Coordinator on January 15, 2010, after 14 years of valuable assistance and faithful service to the Community and Senior Center.
Jean began volunteering in March 1996, as SHINE councelor (Serving the Health Insurance Needs of Elders) helping seniors understand their rights and benefits under Medicare and other health insurance coverage. Jean reviewed coverage, provided written benefit comparisons, prevented consumers from buying unnecessary or duplicate coverage, and helped prepare health benefit claim forms, appeals and applications.
In November 2000, Jean was hired as the Fairhaven Council on Aging’s Outreach Coordinator. Jean met with seniors either in their home or in the office to assess the elder's situation, while explaining community programs and benefits, assisted with applications to programs, aided in their search for services, and acted as an advocate and support for elders in need. Jean was able to offer them supportive services, which provided comfort, and helped them remain safely in their own home. Jean worked cooperatively with both local and regional agencies providing help to elders in navigating public benefit systems.
On January 15, 2010, we hosted an afternoon tea honoring Jean’s devoted service as a small gesture of thanks. Her service has made a difference in the quality of life issues to numerous individuals over her many years handling personal information with accuracy, efficiency, and confidentially
