TRANSPORTATION NEWS
Both drivers Paul and Frank, Cindy Vandenburgh and I met to come up with a more cost effective and safe transportation schedule.

We all agreed that transportation is a very important and much needed service provided by the COA. However, we have identified a few problematic areas that we feel need to be tweeked. A couple of days per week, passengers total a number of sometimes 15 or more which creates a rushed situation for the driver ultimately creating a potentially unsafe situation. To help alleviate this problem, we have decided to place a 10 passenger limit each day. We ask that you call the senior center as soon as you know you will be needing transportation on a particular day. We hope this plan will help to even out the number of passengers per day.

To help assist in cost effectiveness, we ask passengers to limit their destination to one location as driving back and forth from all of the different stores is using fuel wastefully and depleting our budget. Also, please understand that although you may only need about a half hour or less at your destination, you may have to wait until the van returns for the entire group which is typically one hour.

To help you understand the transportation time schedule, I have outlined it below.
MONDAY             1st pick up is at 9:15      Van is done at 1:00

WEDNESDAY       1st pick up is at 9:15    Van is done at 1:00
THURSDAY           1st pick up is at 7:45      Van is done at 1:00

Van Transportation is provided for local errands (senior center, bank, shopping, post office, etc.) through the COA Senior Center. PLEASE CALL ONE DAY IN ADVANCE  508-979-4029   All phases of transportation are planned and supervised by the Director.  Volunteer drivers are covered under the Town of Fairhaven's umbrella liability insurance.

Transportation is curbside to curbside service. Reservations are necessary.

Local Transportation: Do you need a ride to the Senior Center or anywhere in Fairhaven?  Call to arrange a Ride!  Transportation is a key component of our service to the elders in Fairhaven.  The loss of driving privileges is often a contributing factor to isolation and depression. The COA provides transportation five days a week for Fairhaven's Elderly as needed to medical appointments, therapy sessions, beauty/barber shops, banks, pharmacies and to the Senior Center. For medical appointment transportation please call as soon as possible. One week in advance is strongly recommended to allow us time to arrange for a volunteer driver.  All rides depend on space and driver availability.

SHOPPING TRIPS

For seniors who have made reservations, the  Fairhaven COA van driver will pick up shoppers at their residences, transport them to Fairhaven local stores, banks or pharmacies, and give an approximate time to meet the van driver for the return ride home. This is curbside to curbside service. Reservations must be called in by noon the day prior, and up to one month in advance, on a first come, first serve basis.

RESERVATIONS FOR WEDNESDAY MALL TRIPS MUST BE PHONED IN to the Fairhaven COA after the 15th day of the current month for the future month's trips.

There is no charge for this service; donations are welcome. Vehicle upkeep is paid for by these donations. Trips may need to be canceled because of unforeseen circumstances. This is done at the discretion of the COA Director.

Senior Center vehicles are to be used for Senior Center programs only. A schedule of when the vehicles are being used will be kept in the office. The office is to be notified of any vehicle needs, such as gas, oil, minor repairs that are noticed during trips. Volunteers assist the Senior Center Director in scheduling vehicle use and rides. When parked all doors are locked.

MEDICAL APPOINTMENT TRANSPORTATION

The  Fairhaven Senior Center maintains a roster of volunteers willing to use their own cars to drive ambulatory people to medical appointments. Seniors who need such transportation should call the office at least seven (7) days before their appointment.  They are asked their name, address, phone number, and their appointment date, time, doctor's name and address. The office calls people on the driver volunteer list who are available to drive that day.  All rides depend on time and driver availability.

The office will call the person with the appointment to give them the name of their driver.  Volunteer drivers are ask to also call the senior, confirming times and places, and directions if necessary. The driver either waits or will return at a decided time to bring the senior home after the medical appointment.

NOTE: Volunteers will not be asked to provide services for residents who are non-ambulatory, incontinent, violent, or otherwise medically inappropriate.

The Council charges no fee for this service. There is, however, a schedule of suggested donations based on distance, in order to help the volunteer driver defray personal driving and out-of-pocket expenses. Donations may be given directly to the driver.

SOCIAL/RECREATIONAL TRIPS

Recreational trips are planned to cover a broad range of interests, and to be within an affordable range for most seniors. These trips are designed for Fairhaven residents of 60 years plus on a first come, first serve basis. Registration at the COA office is necessary.

TRIP RESERVATION RULES:
o Friends may not reserve for friends.
o Payments must be made with reservation.
o Please No CASH - Make checks payable to: Name of Trip Organizer, and enter trip name on memo line.
o Cancellations cannot be transferred to a friend as there are people on a wait list.
o Refunds are given after the trip, only if the space has been filled from the wait list.
o Non-residents aged 60+ are placed on a wait list to give preference to Fairhaven residents.
o Credits are not carried toward other trips. If appropriate, refunds can be picked-up at the office.
 
REFUNDS

If the Senior Center staff cancels an activity or trip, full refunds are given. If a participant cancels before the deadline date, a full refund is also given. No refunds will be issued for cancellations made after the deadline date, unless the space has been filled from the wait list. Allow a week for cancellations to be processed before refunds are issue.
